Oare Gunpowder Works

Oare Gunpowder works is situated in Faversham and is a place which has become important for local wildlife. This was once a place which was highly industrial is now a place for people of all ages to enjoy learning about a part of Swale’s heritage and nature. Swale Borough Council manages Oare Gunpowder works in partnership with Kent Countryside Management Partnerships. Oare Gunpowder Works has been awarded a Green Flag and is also a Green Heritage Site.

Mid Kent Downs

The Mid Kent Downs is a large area covering areas within Swale and Maidstone and is part of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) within Kent. It is managed by the Mid Kent Downs Countryside Partnership which gives support in conserving the area. The Mid Kent Downs is a beautiful place to go and there are lots to see and do. These places include Perry Wood, Boxley Warren and more.

Perry Wood

Perry Wood is ancient woodland which has beautiful views and is of historical significance. It is part of AONB and has been involved in a conservation project initiated through Heritage Lottery funding. The interesting terrain allows you to see the views of Perry Wood and beyond.

The Blean

The Blean Initiative is a partnership of local authorities, parish councils, conservation organisations and community groups working together to maintain and enhance the unique landscape, cultural heritage and biodiversity of The Blean for all those who live, work or visit here.

Queendown Warren

This is located in Sittingbourne and is an important nature reserve (also part of the AONB), managed by Plantlife. There is a rich diversity in Orchid here, for example the Bee Orchid.

Elmley Nature Reserve

Elmley Marshes is a national nature reserve on the Isle of Sheppey. With changing landscapes and wildlife, there is always something to see here.

Cromers Wood

This ancient woodland is full of wildlife located just outside of Sittingbourne. This is a place which is full of diverse trees and plants is great for a relaxing walk.

Rose Hill Woods and Grove Park

Rose Hill Woods is also small woodland, which is very popular for dog walking. Grove Park which is adjacent to the woods has a play area and cricket grounds, which is frequently used by the Cricket Club.

The Meads Community Woodland

The Meads is home to a variety of trees, rich in diversity. It has a network of paths, great for a relaxing stroll.

Kingsborough Manor Community Woodland

Kingsborough Manor is new community woodland in Eastchurch, which is just next to a new housing development.

Oare Marshes

The Oare Marshes is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is of International Importance for wetland birds and other wildlife. Managed by The Kent Wildlife Trust, this is a great place for nature spotting and fantastic views.

Thistle Hill

Thistle Hill is newly planted woodland which is perfect for walks and exercise, whilst taking in the breath-taking views of the Elmley Marshes.

What is a Green Flag Award?

The Green Flag award is a scheme which has been set up to recognise green spaces which have the highest standards of parks and open spaces in the country. Swale has been awarded a Green Flag at Oare Gunpowder works.

What is a Green Heritage Site?

These are particular awards within the Green Flag award, which aim to promote and preserve heritage sites across the country.

Coastal parks

Barton’s Point

Barton’s point is a coastal park in Sheerness which has a pond, play area and is right next to the beach. There are many activities to do here, including water sports.


At Leysdown Coastal Park, there are cafés, a play area and you are even able to bike ride along cycling routes. There are also lots of amusements and historical places to visit.
