The Mayor of Swale

The Mayor of Swale, Councillor Samuel Koffie-Williams will attend the following engagements. In his absence, he will be represented by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Ken Ingleton.

Sunday November 11

Armistice Day / Remembrance Sunday 

Annual Civic Journey of Commemoration to Ypres, Belgium

The Mayor and Mayoress will join representatives from nations and regions at the Annual Armistice Service in Ypres, Belgium and will be supported by school ambassadors from all nine senior schools across Swale. Accompanied by Mayoral Cadet OC Libby Carew of Sittingbourne and Milton Sea Cadets, the Mayor will lay a floral tribute from the people of Swale at the Menin Gate, preceded by the annual Poppy Parade through the town centre. After the formal service and Last Post, the civic party and the school ambassadors will visit St George’s Chapel in Ypres before re-joining the coach to travel to the Poelkapelle Cemetery and Langemarck German Cemetery.

Remembrance Day Parades

Full details of Services being attended by Councillors representing the Mayor will be issued on a separate list. 

10.30am for 11am The Royal British Legion Sheppey Branch have invited the Mayor to attend this service which will be led by the Rev’d Colin Johnson. The Parade will muster in the car park adjacent to Tesco car park at 10.30am in readiness for the laying of the wreaths. Following the ceremony the Parade will march to the Holy Trinity Church, The Broadway, Sheerness for the Church Service.

As the Mayor will be in Ypres, Belgium, he will be represented by the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Ken Ingleton and Deputy Mayoress Mrs Mick Ingleton, who will lay a wreath at the War Memorial.

3pm approx. War Grave, Harty, St Thomas’ Church A Service and Act of Remembrance will be officiated by Rev Colin Johnson. The Deputy Mayor, Cllr Ken Ingleton, representing the Mayor will attend the service and lay a wreath. 

5.40-45pm for 6pm to 7.30pm Battle’s Over – A Nation’s Tribute

The Deputy Mayor and Mayoress have accepted an invitation from Newington History Group (NHG) to attend their community event to be held at St Mary the Virgin Church in Church Lane, Newington, as part of the national ‘Battle's Over’ commemorations for the centenary of the end of World War One. The event will include tributes to the fallen of World War One including displays, school choir, a light show outside the church, a beacon lighting at a nearby farm, and the bells ringing out for peace. The Deputy Mayor will scatter soil from the battlefields at Ypres around the war memorial.

Tuesday November 13

9.30am to 12 noon Historic Swale meeting

The Mayor has accepted an invitation to attend a meeting of the board of Historic Swale at the Blue Town Heritage Centre at 69 High Street, Blue Town. The board meeting will be followed by a meeting of the 17 museums in Swale.

Wednesday November 14

1.45pm for 2pm Oasis Academy Dementia Café

The Mayor will be attending the special “Songs of Praise” Dementia Café at the Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey’s East Campus at Minster. The BBC will be present filming for Songs of Praise. Regular ‘Dementia Café’ events are organised for residents of Blackburn Lodge and other local residential homes, to visit the Academy and enjoy afternoon tea and entertainment from the students’ performances.

Sunday November 18

1pm Chairman of Sevenoaks Council Curry Lunch

Event in aid of The Silas Pullen Fund at Rajdani, 17-20 London Road, West Kingsdown, TN15 6ES and the Mayor and Mayoress will attend.

Saturday November 24

7.15pm for 7.30pm Parish Christmas Lights Switch-on and Church Christmas Tree Festival

The Deputy Mayor and Mayoress will be at All Saints Church in Eastchurch where residents will congregate outside the church and around the Aviation Memorial for the Parish Council Christmas Lights Switch-on. The Deputy Mayor will say a few words before counting down to the Christmas Lights being turned on. All will then retire to the church for refreshments and an evening of music and food and the Annual Christmas Tree Festival. The Deputy Mayor will do a walking tour of all the trees in the church, more than 100 trees are expected, and then present certificates and pull the raffle at approximately 8.20pm.
