Getting tough on rogue landlords

Do it online

Tuesday 12 March, 2019.

Swale Borough Council is due to get tough on rogue landlords next week.

Civil Penalties of up to £30,000 could be imposed on property landlords and agents who ignore enforcement orders. A list of offences is below:

The civil penalties are available as an alternative to prosecution for offences under the Housing Act 2004, with all fines being able to be retained by the council.

The penalty payments would then be used to combat further housing enforcement issues in Swale.

Cabinet members are due to vote on March 20th.

Cllr Alan Horton, cabinet member responsible for housing and safer communities said:

“We want to encourage landlords to do the right thing. But if they fail, we want to be able to take action without the need to impose a fine. Our residents have a right to live in safely in a place they can call home, one that is properly maintained and in good condition.

“These civil penalties will make landlords think twice before shirking their responsibilities. If they don’t take appropriate action, then the civil penalty will give us a fund to support getting our residents homes to a better standard. We work in partnership with our landlords, and most are totally responsible and look after their tenants. These new measures are to help us correct the behaviour of those who let the side down.

“I hope the risk of a £30,000 fine will focus their minds and generate action. I hope that the small number of landlords affected will do the right thing, tenants get their properties improved and no fines will be issued. It’s an all round win and one I am sure the public will fully understand and support.”
