Food hygiene rating

National scheme

Have you ever wondered about the food hygiene standards of your favourite take-aways, pubs and restaurant kitchens?

The Food Hygiene Rating scheme was launched in Swale for all applicable food businesses on 1 June 2012. This is a Food Standards Agency / Local Authority Partnership Initiative which allows the public to find out about food hygiene standards within businesses and helps them to make informed decisions about where they eat in the borough.

Under the scheme, each food outlet is given a hygiene rating that reflects the findings made at the time of their last food hygiene inspection. Each inspection includes an assessment of the structure, hygiene and practices within the businesses and an assessment of our confidence in the management of food hygiene.

Food Hygiene Ratings

Food hygiene ratings ranks

You can be confident that the scheme is consistent right across Swale (and in other boroughs adopting the scheme) because the scores used to decide the ratings are based on a national code of practice.

Inspected premises are awarded one of the following ratings:

Please note that the score applies to the conditions found at the last inspection only and the rating is just a snapshot in time. It therefore may not represent the current condition of the business. It is not a guide to food quality.

As part of the scheme, businesses are given a window sticker and certificate showing the rating achieved. Display is voluntary at the moment, but may become a legal requirement in the future.

In addition to the sticker and certificate all ratings in the Borough and nationally are published at Food Standards Agency - Food hygiene ratings.

Businesses who want to improve their rating need to attend to everything outlined in their last inspection report before their next routine inspection, and ensure that they comply with current food safety legislation. Businesses should contact the food safety team 01795 417850 if they need more advice about what is required.

More information about the scheme is also available at Food Standards Agency - Food hygiene ratings.
