Food hygiene

Food premises inspection and regulation

The Commercial Team of Environmental Services carry out the Council's statutory duty to inspect and regulate food premises in Swale. We try and make sure that food business operators understand and comply with their duties to provide safe food to eat. We are also a source of help and advice for anyone operating or wishing to set up a food business.

We also deal with complaints about the hygiene of food businesses, people who may be ill from eating contaminated food and foreign body contamination of food.

Our work is governed by an enforcement policy, endorsed by members. This outlines our approach and what rights you have if you don't agree with how we go about our business. We also have to comply with Government targets and professional codes of conduct.

Be we don't deal with everything to do with food. Kent County Council's Trading Standards Officers deal with food labelling, weights and measures, ingredients and chemical contamination of food.

They can be contacted at:

PO Box 320,
TN24 8AS
(Call: 01233 898803)

For more information including regulations, guidance material and leaflets go to the Food Standards Agency website.
