Crime reduction advice

Take action to ensure your valuables are safe

The Community Safety Partnership (CSP) brings together a number of agencies to help residents across Swale to protect their property and valuables.

Thieves can strike anywhere, from remote rural farms to busy town centre estates. By taking the right precautions you can make it harder for them and ensure that if your property is stolen, there's a better chance of it being traced and returned.

Property Marking

Swale Borough Council, Kent County Council and the housing association Optivo work closely with Kent Police to assist Swale residents mark their property - so that they are able to discourage thieves as well as ensure recovered property is returned to its rightful owner.

Forensic property marking solutions are a valuable asset in the partnership’s fight against crime; and promotion of their use within treated areas acts as an additional deterrent to offenders. There are a number of forensic property marking solutions on the market.

Smartwater is a forensic property marking solution, which contains a unique identification code, similar to DNA, which links offenders to a crime scene through any stolen property. It can help recover your property if it is stolen. It can be purchased from www.smartwater.com . The Community Safety Partnership provides Smartwater to properties, free of charge, that have been identified as being at risk of burglary. There is only a limited number of packs available and should be reserved for those that have received a card in the post, identifying them as being at risk of burglary due to there having been one local to their property.

Instructions are included within the pack, but it is applied using a small brush to your property. It is a clear solution which cannot be seen without a UV light. If your property was to be stolen, it can be used by the Police to be returned to you. You must also register your pack of Smartwater online, but details on how to do this are included in the pack.

If you are concerned about having already been a victim of burglary, or that they are scared, or witnessed any suspicious behaviour please call the Police on their non-emergency number 101. We also encourage all our residents to register all their valuables on Immobilise, the UK National Property Register.

Crime reduction advice for your home

Report anything suspicious to the Police on 101 or call CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Protect your holiday home

Caravans and holiday homes can become a target in the 'out of season' months. Protect it from thieves by ensuring that you:

Protect your sheds and outbuildings

Protect your vehicles

Leaving anything in a parked car can make it more attractive to criminals. Even leaving a jacket on the seat can make your car more likely to be broken into. The best way to protect your belongings is to remove them and to lock your car whenever you leave it - no matter how briefly.

Thieves know where to look for your valuables so there are no good hiding places. It is advisable to:

Protect your mobile phone and gadgets

If your phone is lost or stolen, knowing your IMEI number can help you deactivate your phone and avoid fraudulent bills.

How to find your IMEI number

Keep your mobile safe

Protect your purse and wallet

Protect your bike
