Abandoned Vehicles

Reporting a Vehicle

If you wish to report an abandoned vehicle, within Faversham, Sittingbourne, Isle of Sheppey or the surrounding villages you can do so by online. Please have all details of the vehicle to hand before making the report.

In order to discourage the illegal dumping of vehicles throughout the Borough, Kent County Council offer a free collection and disposal service which can be found on their Vehicle Surrender Scheme page.

Overview

Local Authorities have a duty to remove vehicles believed to be abandoned in the open air. For further information see https://www.gov.uk/guidance/abandoned-vehicles-council-responsibilities

An untaxed vehicle is NOT ALWAYS an abandoned vehicle. If you wish to report an untaxed vehicle you must contact the DVLA on 08000 325202 or view the Direct.gov website for details of how to report a vehicle and report it online.

A vehicle that is a danger or an obstruction on the highway should be reported to the police by calling 101 or by calling 999 in an emergency.

Steps we take

We are required to undertake a number of steps before a vehicle is actually removed. When a vehicle has been reported as abandoned (either by using these web pages or by letter/telephone), the Council will ensure that every effort is made to contact the legal owner of the vehicle. This is to ensure that it is actually abandoned. To fulfil this requirement the Council carry out the following steps and procedures:

If the vehicle is claimed by a person then it is no longer deemed to be abandoned.

All enquiries regarding vehicles that have been removed should be directed to Kent County Council on 03000413322.
