Stray dogs service picks up top RSPCA award

For the eighth year in a row, Swale Borough Council’s stray dog service has been highlighted as one of the best in the country by the RSPCA.

The service has once again been awarded the Gold Footprint Award, which recognises good practice in animal welfare by local authorities in England and Wales.

The award also recognises organisations that have gone above and beyond their basic service requirements to ensure higher animal welfare standards, and those that demonstrate the importance of actively promoting schemes and services such as micro-chipping.

Cllr Alan Horton, cabinet member for safer families and communities at the council said:

"The vast majority of resident will never come across our stray dog service but for those who do – when they’ve lost or found a treasured pet – they can be confident that the service is of the highest standard.

"This doesn’t just apply to the officer who retrieves a dog. The award recognises the effectiveness of call handling, out of hours provision, and even the use of social media to reunite owners and pets.

"We were the first council in Kent to receive the award, and the fact we’ve held it ever since shows a consistent level of high quality that local people should be proud of."
