Background
The Gateway is an exciting new development coming to Sheppey this year. It will give residents’ access to advice and guidance from a wide range of public and voluntary service providers all under one roof, and in the heart of Sheerness town centre.
Swale Borough Council has been working closely with Kent County Council (KCC) to develop the Gateway with support and involvement of a wide range of partners. The Gateway will be central to Sheerness town centre’s regeneration and will see Swale Borough Council Sheerness district office relocate from Trinity Road to 38-42 High Street, to the Ex-Woolworths building.
Over the past months, SBC/KCC has worked very hard to secure the Ex-Woolworth building, and the necessary permissions for the Gateway development. The lease was secured by the County Council on the 28th October 2010. Planning approval has already been granted for the change of use of the ex-Woolworths building, and for essential alterations to be made. The alterations will deliver a very high level of compliance with BS8355/9999 providing a building that is fully accessible to people of all ages and abilities. A planning application submitted for the proposed signage was approved in January 2011. You can view this application via this link UK Planning - The Gateway Application.
Throughout 2010 - service partners have been engaged in developing their requirements and the design brief. The internal layout is now agreed, and it is anticipated that the entire building capacity (1450 m2) will be fully utilised by this scheme.
