Road Sweepers visit Meadowfield
The 16-18 year Unit at Meadowfield School helps prepare the young people for life after school and even helps them to get into employment by organising work placements. One of their leaving certificates entails work on their local environment.
On Tuesday, 24th June, Verdant took two of their vehicles into the school so that the young people could see how they worked and were able to talk to the drivers
The big sweeper was very popular as some were able to sit inside, press the horn and see the brushes moving.
The other vehicle that went along to the school collects fly tipped waste and bags. The driver and his colleague were able to tell the students all about their work and what happens when they go to the tip.
There were around 38 young people and they were split into two groups. Whilst one group was with the vehicles the other group were learning about litter, the groups then swapped so that everyone would have the opportunity of learning about the vehicles.
Les Smith Operations Manager for Verdant said “We were very pleased indeed to visit Meadowfield. The young people were very enthusiastic and receptive. It was great to be able to tell them all about our work.”
Anne Ryman environmental Projects Officer Swale Borough council said “We have all really enjoyed working with the 16-18 year unit at Meadowfield. It was a pleasure to see their faces when they saw the vehicles. We also talked to them about graffiti and performed some role play, where at the end some of the youngsters volunteered to help clean up some graffiti.”
