Plans to Catch Motorbike Nuisance on Community Camera

Local Police and Swale Borough Council are working together to drive out motorcycle nuisance from the borough.

Following a number of complaints from Eden Village residents, about nuisance motorcycles being ridden on the pavements and on private land, without permission – the Community Safety Unit has installed a mobile CCTV within the area to catch offenders in the act.

By using the CCTV footage, local Police can identify offenders and the bikes in question.  Once identified, or caught in person, offenders are issued a Notice, which may result in the seizure of the vehicle.

Working in conjunction with an increased number of PCSO and Street Warden joint patrols, it is anticipated that the camera and increased physical presence will serve as a valuable and highly visible anti-social behaviour deterrent.

Sgt Dan Worthington, Sittingbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “CCTV footage is a valuable tool in our fight against anti-social behaviour so we work very closely with the local council and Community Safety Unit to site cameras in the most appropriate and useful areas.”

“It can be difficult to catch offenders in the act, so by having a camera in place we are able to record all the offenders and bikes – making it easier to identify them and issue a Notice where necessary.”

Alister Andrews, Environmental Response Team Manager, concluded: “Often these vehicles are not meant for on-road purposes, so are not taxed or insured.  So the problems can escalate to more than noise or nuisance.”

“We continue to work closely with the local Police in order to catch offenders who are riding without permission on private land or causing a nuisance to residents by riding on pavements or dangerously in alleyways.”
