Welcome to Swale Borough Council’s annual report for 2010/11. The report is a summary of what we achieved for the borough last year, sometimes on our own but often in partnership with others. It showcases a few of the many ways that we are working to make Swale a better place for everyone.
Our vision for the borough is to transform its economic, social and environmental prospects, making it one of the best places in Britain in which to live, work, learn and invest. This was never going to be quick or easy, but we made some really good progress during 2010/11.
Swale’s streets, for example, were officially among the cleanest anywhere in the country last year. Meanwhile, our strong partnership with Kent Police contributed to falls of well over 20% on the previous year in home burglaries, robberies and serious violent crime, and we achieved the second-biggest reduction of any Kent district for each of these types of offence.
We carried out more home adaptations for elderly and vulnerable people than any other agency in the county - and we carried them out more quickly than anyone else too. Perhaps most significantly of all, we took a major step towards the large-scale regeneration of Sittingbourne Town Centre when we selected our preferred development partner, opening the way to detailed negotiations to realise our exciting ambitions for the town.
These are just a few examples of how we worked to make Swale a better place and provide real value for money for our taxpayers in 2010/11. We hope you will enjoy reading about some more of them in this report.
